Life membership for distinguished service of John McLaughlin

Honorory life membership for John McLaughlin in Ennis Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club
Honory Life Membership for John McLaughlin from Ger Browne

At the last AGM of Ennis Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club there was a unanimous decision by members  to confer honorary life membership to long standing member John McLaughlin.

Last week at  recent club function this accolade was officially conferred. In the citation for the honororay membership the long distinguished years  of service by John over many decades were reviewed;

Veteran member  Ger Browne outlined the many roles that John has performed for the club; chairman, tennis captain, badminton captain, Munster Branch Tennis Ireland member, International umpire, Tournament  Director of the Ennis Tennis Senior Open.

John’s contribution  to both the tennis and badminton sections of the club was particularly noted. In the week that volunteerism in sport received national recognition it was fitting that one of the Clare’s  finest exponents of selfless commitment to sport was acknowledged.
Members wish John well.

Many of the club’s  long standing members were present to wish John well. John’s many skills were further evident as he dug out his guitar and helped provide music for the evening with fellow club members Ger Browne on guitar and Cathy  Foley on violin. Club member and top tenor Vincent Di Placido delivered a stirring rendition of the Neapolitan love song, Ritorna a Sorrento  that would not have been out of place in an international opera hall.

The award to John McLaughlin is only the fourth such award in over 100 years. Previous honorary life members were; Rev Sean Moriarity  (club tennis champion in the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s),  Tom Eade and Donie O’Halloran.

Bronze medal at Community Games

This year Ennis St.Johns Under 15 Badminton Team was made up of all
Ennis Tennis & Badminton Club members.

The team made up of -  Amy MacNamara, Emma Kavanagh, Sophie Marron,
Karen MacNamara, Aine Ryan, Cian Ruane, Cathal Ruane, Eoin Flynn recently represented Munster at the Community Games Finals in Athlone were they took home the bronze medal.

They did well but unfortunately were defeated 3-2 by a very strong Wexford team representing Leinster.

They then went on to claim 3rd place from the Monaghan team representing Ulster winning all 5 games.

As most of the team will be under 15 again next year they will be back
striving for gold!!!

Thanks to Tony Flynn – Team Manager who put in a lot of time getting the team to the finals.
